What Does the Future Hold for the Beijing Church of Christ?
The first year of the existence of the Beijing church of Christ has been terrific! We have enjoyed visitors from many different countries. Our first meetings were an outstanding opportunity to provide sound, encouraging worship for visitors during the Olympic and Paralympic games. This original goal has been accomplished and provided the initial opportunity to obtain legal sanction from the Chinese government to meet. Although the Olympics in Beijing are long gone, the work of this church marches along!
The Opportunity Ahead
Beijing is home to hundreds of thousands of foreign residents. Business, education, and retirement are a few of the reasons why so many “expats” make their home in Beijing. Some stay for a few weeks, others their entire lives. With the present passport restriction for worship, we have a great opportunity to reach out to these expats. This will in fact be easier now that the Olympics have concluded. We already have a few possibilities for outreach. Those who remain in Beijing are needed to establish a core group. Those who return to their home countries may, through our influence, be taking the gospel with them! So such a big city has a greater opportunity for global outreach.
What Can I Do?
The Beijing church of Christ needs help. We need you. We need Christians who can come help us build up the church in Beijing. There are several possibilities. First, many native English speakers are needed in China to teach conversational English classes at every level. The period of commitment is usually only one school year. If anyone is interested, we have connections for such possibilities (from middle school to college). Second, there are also many international companies in Beijing. Though we do not have immediate contacts, we would be glad to investigate certain fields at your request. Third, Beijing has excellent universities that cater to foreign students. Study in Beijing and help the Lord’s church as well! Finally, those who have already retired have much freedom in their choice of residence. Why not retire to Beijing and help us build up the church? Surely there are other possibilities if our desire to reach the lost is strong enough. If you are interested in moving to Beijing or have any questions or comments, please visit the ‘contact us’ page. Also please pass this information on to any individual, group, or church that might be interested in helping.
